ABOUT THE CLASS
Storytelling & Worldbuilding in Concept Art
-
Why I decided to teach this class: A lot of classes focus on technical skills or very basic worldbuilding. I believe my creativity and strength in design/worldbuilding have enabled me to find success in my career. I’d like to share a design and story focused course for people at different levels in their journey. Every part of your project will be brimming with life and personality, so I really encourage you to take time to brainstorm some ideas before we start.
This is a design heavy workshop with a focus on worldbuilding and adding personality to your work. Basic perspective knowledge required. This class will be taught from the ground up! Skills you’ll be working on are:
-
Design from a story focused lens
-
Composition
-
Making a cohesive story from start to finish
-
Developing a professional workflow from reference gathering to thumbnailing and being comfortable making design iterations.
-
Generating ideas and helping yourself get out of “drawing block”
-
Basic Blender (and I mean basic!)
9 WEEKS - $600
Why this price? I went to a state school in Texas that didn’t have an illustration program or anything close to a concept art program. This led me to find online classes and resources. These classes were really expensive, and not everyone can afford them. I want to design this class with that in mind. This for those of us who don’t have access to “premium” classes, are ballin’ on a budget, or are unsure of what kind of steps to take next in your career.
-
Why this length? I want to be sure we can complete a full portfolio project with a little buffer room built in. No stress, lots of fun!
-
Small class size: I’d like to keep this to 8 students so we have plenty of time to critique, do a lecture, and watch a demo.
-
This will be a homework heavy class. You can adjust the project scope according to your schedule (and I’ll help with that)!
-
I will be recording demos! You’ll have access to the videos after class ends. I’ll also be making a lecture for the bulk of the weeks.
Week 1: Character creation and world building basics!
-
We need to know all about your character in order to build your world. But before that, let’s figure out your personal mythology! What do you like to draw, what kind of stories do you like to see? We’ll work through my creative process to start a project that’s brimming with life.
-
Ideating, reference gathering, thumbnailing
-
Why I don’t care about drawing style
